16/12/2023Schinus terebinthifolius is an evergreen tree or large tree. It’s commonly called Brazilian pepper tree, is a small, often multi-trunked. Schinus terebinthifolia is native to Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. Brazilian pepper is widely cultivated as an ornamental.

The most distinctive thing about this plant its white flowers, The fruit is a small red spherical drupe carried in dense clusters of hundreds of berries. The fruits are initially green, becoming bright red when ripe, and are usually mature by December. Fruits of Schinus terebinthifolius are also used in the food industry. Although it is not a true pepper, its dried drupes are often sold as pink peppercorns. The seeds can be used as a spice, adding a pepper-like taste to food, as are the fruits from the related species Schinus mole .Schinus terebinthifolius has been used as a garden plant in many countries especially in Egypt. It is planted as both an ornamental and shade tree.
The wood of Brazilian pepper is used in construction, as stakes, posts, and railway sleepers.
